Great work is not done right now. Great work is done by perseverance.
I was riding my bike up a hill, a big hill, well more than a mile of climbing. Hard work in the hot summer air.
My mind played a trick on me, however. At the bottom of the climb, I could see way up the road just how much I had to climb and it had me shook. The climb felt very difficult.
I rode around the base of the local “mountain” and rode up from the other side where the road has a few turns but is just as steep and long.
I felt each pedal rotation and told myself “just one more spin” over and over again.
I was at the top in no time. It was incredible how much easier it felt riding while not looking all the way to the end.
Perseverance kept me turning over the pedals and after many individual rotations, the great climb was done.
It’s the same for our great work. Focus on the one thing each moment that can be done and soon you will have completed the great work.
Otherwise (as I often do) you’ll be caught staring at the greatness of the work and never getting started.
