Stop wanting it and you’ll get it

In Andy Warhol’s Philosophy, “From A to B and Back Again” he tells a story about not having friends and wanting them, but as soon as he didn’t care for friends, everyone wanted to be his friend.

His famous quote about this is, “As soon as you stop wanting something, you get it.” Warhol points out that in his experience this has been axiomatic.

In the past year or so I’ve applied this principle to work vs. breaks. I never want to stop or rest, but the moment I let go of wanting to be great at work and never resting, I take more breaks (feel more rested & better sleep), I end up doing more work in less time, and I think the work is better/more creative.

It’s really difficult to do and letting go is like sleeping, the harder you try to do it, the harder it is. You simply must believe that it will work and you will then have the courage to schedule breaks, sabbaticals, and limit your work.
