Getting in front of the “right” audience to get helpful attention is very costly. I was watching the Democratic debate the other evening and found a live counter of how long each candidate spoke during the debate.
It got me thinking about how each of these candidates for president had spent large sums of money and devoted considerable time to debate prep, travel time, the debate itself, press appearances after the debate, etc… just to get about 11 minutes of actual time talking.
That time includes the introductory and closing statements which everybody knows are pretty much fluff anyway. Probably more like 7 minutes of actual potentially impactful time.
Setting aside any contentions we may have about political debates being effective in stirring support and changing the polls, this is a very interesting example of what we should be willing to invest to get in front of the right audience.
It’s not about quantity. It’s about short bursts of really high-quality stuff. You don’t have to change the world, you just have to polish one little stone VERY well. That will generate impact and people will notice.
Use massive effort to create great stuff and great experiences and use massive effort to take that to wherever you must to get the attention you or your business need. A massive effort for a short time in front of the right audience does big things.
For those who are curious, here’s that debate time chart I referenced earlier.
